34-year-old Birmingham man shot to death in Hueytown’s first homicide of 2023

A predawn shooting in Hueytown Sunday left a 34-year-old man dead.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Dwyer Koharrell Fields. He lived in Birmingham.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., Hueytown police and fire responded to a report of a person shot in the 100 block of Fair Street. When they arrived, they found Fields unresponsive in front of a residence, said Hueytown police Lt. Michael Shupe.

Fields was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:09 a.m. The shooter remained on the scene.

Investigators determined that an altercation initially started with Fields and a woman at another location in Birmingham. Both parties drove separately to the residence in the 100 block of Fair Street, Shupe said.

At that location, an altercation occurred between the Fields and a family member of the woman with whom Fields was initially arguing.

During that altercation, shots were fired, and Fields was struck.

Shupe said the case is still under investigation and the results of that investigation will be presented to the Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office.

Fields is Hueytown’s first homicide of 2023. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 84 homicides this year, including the one in Hueytown.
